Dharmadam Island (Green Island) is a small 2-hectare private island in Thalassery, Kannur District, Kerala. It lies about 100 metres from the mainland at Dharmadam. The island, covered with coconut palms and dense bush, can be seen from the Muzhappilangad beach, from which permitted people can walk out to the island during low tide. Dharmadam, known earlier as Dharmapattanam.

Historical Background

The Kolathunadu emerged into independent 10 principalities i.e., Kadathanadu (Vadakara), Randathara or Poyanad (Dharmadom), Kottayam (Thalassery), Nileshwaram, Iruvazhinadu (Panoor, Kurumbranad etc., under separate royal chieftains due to the outcome of internal dissensions.

In 1998, the Kerala Government took over this land for tourism development.[1] Dharmadam is located 4 km from the town of Thalassery.
