Questo collegamento fu proposto per la prima volta già nel 1699 ma la sua costruzione iniziò nel 1817. Lungo circa 584 km, conta un totale di 36 chiuse ed un dislivello totale di 172 metri.
Il canale permise alle imbarcazioni l'accesso ai grandi laghi interni da New York, diventando così un'importante via di commercio, permettendo alla grande mela di superare la città di Filadelfia in quanto a porto commerciale. È stato il primo sistema di trasporto tra il litorale orientale e l'interno occidentale degli Stati Uniti che non richiedesse il portage.
Ai giorni nostri è invece utilizzato in maggior misura a fini turistici.

Der Eriekanal, seit 1918 New York State Barge Canal, ist ein Kanal im US-Bundesstaat New York, der den Eriesee bei Buffalo mit dem Hudson River verbindet. The Erie Canal is a canal that traverses east–west through upstate New York, eastern United States, as part of the cross-state route of the New York State Canal System (formerly known as the New York State Barge Canal). It was built to create a navigable water route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes Basin, originally stretching for 584 kilometres (363 mi) from the Hudson River at Albany to Lake Erie in Buffalo.
