The Portuguesa River (Spanish: Río Portuguesa, also Río la Portuguesa, Río de la Portuguesa) is a river of Venezuela. It is part of the Orinoco River basin, and is a tributary of the Apure River (which is, in turn, a tributary of the Orinoco).

Legend has it that the river's name originated from a woman from Portugal who drowned in its waters. In turn, the river's name is the origin of the name of the Venezuelan state of Portuguesa.

El Río Portuguesa, conocido también como Río La Portuguesa, o Río de la Portuguesa, lleva ese nombre en honor a una joven y hermosa doncella, esposa de don Melchor Luis (uno de los Fundadores de la Ciudad de Guanare fechada en 3 de noviembre de 1591), quien murió ahogada en aquella aventura colonizadora. Es un río de Venezuela que recorre de oeste a este el territorio del Estado de Portuguesa y el sur del Estado Cojedes, dentro de la Región Centro Occidental.
