Das Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names benannte ihn 1976 nach Commander William P. Sutherland, Leiter der Abordnung der Unterstützungseinheiten der United States Navy auf der McMurdo-Station im antarktischen Winter 1974.

It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Commander William P. Sutherland, U.S. Navy, Officer-in-Charge of the Naval Support Force winter-over detachment at McMurdo Station in 1974.
