C'est par le Pont Pedro de Valdivia que l'on rejoint l'Île Teja, située au nord-ouest du centre historique et entourée par le río Cau-Cau (es) au nord qui relie le río Cruces (es) à l'ouest avec le río Calle-Calle (es) pour former à l'est le río Valdivia.
Au XVIe siècle, l'île fut occupée par le conquistador espagnol Francisco Pérez de Valenzuela (es) qui s'installa à Valdivia pour en devenir le maire en 1563. L'île, qui s'appelait à l'époque Isla de Valenzuela, sera renommé plus tard Isla Teja car on y avait construit au XVIIIe siècle une fabrique de briques et de tuiles (teja signifiant tuile en espagnol).

Sie liegt nordwestlich der Altstadt Valdivias und ist von dieser durch den Río Valdivia getrennt. Der Río Cruces fließt von Norden kommend westlich an der Insel vorbei und mündet an ihrer Südspitze in den Río Valdivia, der einige Kilometer weiter westlich in den Pazifischen Ozean mündet. Teja island (Spanish isla Teja) is an island in the city of Valdivia, Chile, surrounded by three rivers: Cau-Cau river to the north, Cruces river to the west and Valdivia river to the southeast. Prior to the mid-19th century the island was known as isla Valenzuela after Francisco de Valenzuela, an encomendero that settled there in 1552. In the second half of the 19th century the island became known for its roof tile (Spanish: teja) and brick factory, hence the name isla Teja.[1] Initially it was outside the proper city, but with the arrival of German immigrants many of them settled there[2] and since 1939 the island is directly connected to downtown Valdivia through the Pedro de Valdivia bridge. A large section of the island's western riverside sank below water level due to the Great Chilean earthquake of 1960.[es] Isla Teja
