Tabiteuea es el nombre colectivo de dos islas próximas entre sí: Tabiteuea Norte y Tabiteuea Sur. Las islas están ubicadas en el océano Pacífico, al sur de Tarawa, y pertenecen a la República de Kiribati.

Tabiteuea Norte tiene un área terrestre de 26 km² y cuenta con una población de 2.990 personas en el 2001; mientras que Tabiteuea Sur, con un área terrestre de 12 km², tiene una población de 1.293 individuos.

"Tabiteuea", en idioma gilbertense, significa "tierra sin jefes", ya que la isla es tradicionalmente igualitaria. A finales del siglo XIX, las dos islas fueron el sitio de una guerra religiosa cuando la población de Tabiteuea Norte se convirtió al cristianismo e invadió Tabiteuea Sur (cuya población tenía sus propias prácticas religiosas).

Tabiteuea (formerly Drummond's Island) is an atoll in the Gilbert Islands, Kiribati, farther south of Tarawa. This atoll is the bigger and the most populated of the Gilbert Islands but Tarawa. The atoll consists of one main island, Aanikai [it] in the north, and several smaller islets in between along the eastern rim of the atoll. The atoll has a total land area of 38 km2 (15 sq mi), while the lagoon measures 365 km2 (141 sq mi). The population numbered 5,261 in 2015. The islanders have customary fishing practices related to the lagoon and the open ocean.[1]
