Nasce nelle Ande (Cordigliera Orientale), non lontano da Bogotà e si dirige a nord-est verso la confluenza con il suo affluente, il Río Cravo Norte. Successivamente, per una buona parte del suo corso, costituisce il confine tra Colombia e Venezuela in direzione est fino alla confluenza con l'Orinoco in prossimità della città di Puerto Carreño.
Il bacino idrografico del fiume Meta si estende su una superficie di 93.800 km². Nel suo corso il fiume attraversa la regione del Llanos. La sua importanza economica è elevata, perché costituisce una grande via navigabile tra i due paesi che attraversa.
Ha dato il suo nome al dipartimento colombiano di Meta. La città principale attraversata è Puerto López.

Der Río Meta ist mit einem mittleren Abfluss von rund 4300 m³/s der drittgrößte Nebenfluss des südamerikanischen Stromes Orinoco und fließt durch die östlichen Llanos von Kolumbien. Er ist 1200 Kilometer lang und auf ca. 900 Kilometern ab Puerto López für den Schiffsverkehr freigegeben. The Meta River is a major left tributary of the Orinoco River in eastern Colombia and southern Venezuela, South America. The Meta originates in the Eastern Ranges of the Andes and flows through the Meta Department, Colombia as the confluence of the Humea, Guatiquía and Guayuriba rivers. It flows east-northeastward across the Llanos Orientales ("Eastern Plains") of Colombia following the direction of the Meta Fault.[5] The Meta forms the northern boundary of Vichada Department, first with Casanare Department, then with Arauca Department, and finally with Venezuela, down to Puerto Carreño where it flows into the Orinoco.- [it] Meta (fiume Colombia)
