Il fiume ha parecchie sorgenti vicine ai villaggi di Syresham e Sulgrave nel Northamptonshire. Scorre attraverso Brackley, Buckingham, Milton Keynes presso Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Olney, Bedford, St Neots, Godmanchester, Huntingdon, Hemingford Grey, St Ives, la città cattedrale di Ely, Littleport, Downham Market, costituisce il confine orientale della parrocchia civile di Buckden ed entra a The Wash presso King's Lynn.
L'Agenzia per l'Ambiente (Environment Agency) è l'autorità competente per la navigazione sul fiume, e tenta di attirarvi sempre più naviganti.
Gli estuari dell'Ouse (Ouse Washes) sono un'area naturalistica di importanza internazionale.

Canottaggio
Nel 1944 l'annuale Regata Oxford-Cambridge tra le università di Oxford e di Cambridge ebbe luogo su questo fiume, tra le città di Littleport e Queen Adelaide, l'unica volta in cui non si è tenuta sul Tamigi; fu vinta da Oxford.[3]
Il Great Ouse viene ora usato per allenamento dai circoli di canottaggio delle università di Cambridge.

The River Great Ouse (/uːz/) is a river in England, the longest of several British rivers called "Ouse". From Syresham in Northamptonshire, the Great Ouse flows through Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk to drain into the Wash and the North Sea near Kings Lynn. Authorities disagree both on the river's source and its length with one quoting 160 mi (260 km)[2] and another 143 mi (230 km).[3] Mostly flowing north and east, it is the fifth longest river in the United Kingdom. The Great Ouse has been historically important for commercial navigation, and for draining the low-lying region through which it flows; its best-known tributary is the Cam, which runs through Cambridge. Its lower course passes through drained wetlands and fens and has been extensively modified, or channelised, to relieve flooding and provide a better route for barge traffic.
