Sie entspringt in Werther in Nordrhein-Westfalen, fließt größtenteils auf den Grenzen der westfälischen Kreise Gütersloh und Herford zum niedersächsischen Landkreis Osnabrück und mündet auf der Grenze von Melle (Niedersachsen) zu Bünde (Westfalen).
