Er liegt im Voyageurs-Nationalpark nördlich der Seen Kabetogama Lake und Namakan Lake. Er ist bis zu 50 Meter tief, 80 Kilometer lang und 48 Kilometer breit. Er liegt auf 338 m und besitzt ungefähr 1600 Inseln. Er ist ein Relikt des prähistorischen Sees Agassizsee, der früher eine Fläche von 440.000 km² bedeckte. Er fließt durch den Rainy River ab und ist ein beliebter Anglerplatz.
Im See werden folgende Fischarten gefangen: Black Crappie, Hecht, Steinbarsch, Schwarzbarsch und Glasaugenbarsch.[2][1]

Rainy Lake (French: lac à la Pluie; Ojibwe: gojiji-zaaga'igan) is a freshwater lake with a surface area of 360 square miles (932 km2) that straddles the border between the United States and Canada. The Rainy River issues from the west side of the lake and is harnessed to make hydroelectricity for US and Canadian locations. International Falls, Minnesota and the much smaller city of Ranier, Minnesota are situated opposite Fort Frances, Ontario, on either side of the Rainy River. Rainy Lake and Rainy River establish part of the boundary between the US state of Minnesota and the Canadian province of Ontario.[2][fr] Lac à la Pluie
Le lac à la Pluie (en anglais : Rainy Lake) est une étendue d'eau située au Canada à la limite des États-Unis. Le lac à la Pluie s'étend depuis l'extrémité nord du Minnesota à la hauteur de la ville frontière de International Falls et du parc national des Voyageurs, puis s'étend sur toute sa surface dans la province de l'Ontario à partir de la ville frontière canadienne Fort Frances.
