Il monte Fumo (Rauchkofel in tedesco - 3.251 m s.l.m.) è una montagna delle Alpi dei Tauri occidentali (sottosezione Alpi della Zillertal). Si trova lungo la linea di confine tra l'Italia (Regione Trentino-Alto Adige) e l'Austria (Tirolo).

Toponimo
Il nome tradizionale della montagna è attestato nel XIX secolo come Rauchkofl e significa letteralmente "montagna aspra" (in tedesco "rauher Kofel"). Il nome italiano, creato da Ettore Tolomei, fraintende questa base etimologica e ritiene erroneamente che "Rauch-" significhi "fumo".[1]
Caratteristiche
Dal versante italiano la sua piramide rocciosa domina la parte alta della valle del torrente Aurino, sovrastando l'abitato di Predoi; da quello austriaco la Zillertal. Non va confuso con una montagna omonima posta sul lato opposto della Valle Aurina in corrispondenza dell'abitato di Cadipietra.
Ascesa alla vetta
È possibile ascendere alla vetta dal versante meridionale. Lasciata la Lausitzer Weg, un comodo sentiero porta alla quota di 2976 m; da qui si sale con facili passaggi fino all'anticima (3128 m) e quindi alla vetta. Non esistono rifugi nella zona: l'unico punto di ristoro è la Waldner Alm (Malga della Selva) a 2068 m, facilmente raggiungibile da Predoi.

Der Rauhkofel oder Rauchkofel (ital. Monte Fumo) ist ein 3251 m ü. A.[4] hoher Berg im Hauptkamm der Zillertaler Alpen, der hier die Grenze zwischen dem österreichischen Bundesland Tirol und der italienischen Provinz Südtirol bildet. Der Name des Bergs rührt von seinem rauen – mundartlich "rauchen" – Aussehen, das ihm das Granitblockwerk verleiht, das den Gipfelaufbau bildet.[3] Der Rauhkofel überragt die Nachbargipfel im Hauptkamm beträchtlich und ist der beste Aussichtsgipfel der östlichen Zillertaler Alpen.[5] Der Ost- und Südgrat des Rauhkofels sind dem Hauptkamm der Zillertaler Alpen zuzuordnen. Nach Nordwesten löst sich am Rauhkofel der Magnerkamm, der den inneren Zillergrund und die Hundskehle voneinander trennt. Nördlich des Gipfels finden sich die Reste des Rauhkofelkees. Am Südwestfuß des Gipfels liegt der Waldner See, der größte See des Ahrntals.[en] Rauhkofel
The Rauhkofel or Rauchkofel (3,251 m (AA), Italian: Monte Fumo) is a summit on the main crest of the Zillertal Alps, which forms the border between the Austrian state of Tyrol and the Italian province of South Tyrol. The name of the mountain ("rugged peak") comes from the rugged appearance of the granite blocks that form the summit .[1] The Rauhkofel rises above its neighbouring peaks on the main Zillertal ridge considerably and it is considered the best lookout mountain in the eastern Zillertal Alps.[2] The east and south arêtes of the Rauhkofel are part of the main crest of the Zillertal Alps. Another ridge runs from the summit heading northwest; on its continuation at a distance of just under two kilometres is the Kleinspitze (3,172 m). North of the summit are the remnants of the Rauhkofelkees glacier. At the southwestern foot of the peak is the Waldner See, the largest lake in the Ahrntal valley.- [it] Monte Fumo
