La montagna fu salita per la prima volta il 16 giugno 1865 da G. H. Fox, Douglas William Freshfield, Francis Fox Tuckett, François Devouassoud e Peter Michel.


Toponimo


Il nome tradizionale della montagna è attestato nel 1770 come Mösele Hoher Ferner e si rifà al "Mösele", una palude d'alta montagna. Il nome italiano, creato da Ettore Tolomei, è un adattamento fonetico.[1]

Der Große Möseler (italienisch Grande Mèsule) ist mit 3480 m ü. A.[3] der zweithöchste Berg der Zillertaler Alpen nach dem Hochfeiler (3509 m). Er liegt im Zillertaler Hauptkamm, der hier die Staatsgrenze zwischen dem österreichischen Bundesland Tirol und der italienischen Autonomen Provinz Südtirol bildet. Er ist durch seine Masse der beherrschende Berg des Gebietes. Von Nordwesten aus betrachtet erscheint er als firnbedeckter Dom, von Nordosten als ebenmäßig geformter Felskegel. Der Berg ist vom Furtschaglhaus aus leicht erreichbar und wird daher oft begangen. Die Erstbesteigung fand am 16. Juni 1865 durch George Henry Fox, Douglas William Freshfield und Francis Fox Tuckett mit den Bergführern François Devouassoud aus Chamonix und Peter Michel aus Grindelwald sowie zwei namentlich nicht bekannten Trägern statt.[4]

The Große Möseler (Italian: Grande Mèsule), also called the Mösele, is a mountain, 3,480 m (AA), and thus the second highest peak in the Zillertal Alps after the Hochfeiler (3,509 m). It lies on the Zillertal main ridge which forms the border here between the Austrian state of Tyrol and the Italian province of South Tyrol. Its great size makes it the dominant mountain in the area. Seen from the northwest it appears like a firn-covered dome; but from the northeast as a regularly shaped cone of rock. Prominent arêtes radiate from the peak to the northwest, east and south. The mountain is easily ascended from the Furtschaglhaus and is often visited as a result. It was first climbed on 16 June 1865 by G. H. Fox, Douglas William Freshfield and Francis Fox Tuckett with mountain guides, François Devouassoud from Chamonix and Peter Michel from Grindelwald, as well as two unknown bearers.[1]
