Gli antichi Gotlandi (o Guter/Göter) provenivano da quest'isola, e, per discendenza da questi, anche la tribù dei Geati, che partendo da qui occuparono poi la terraferma (nella regione che da loro prese il nome di Götaland) e le tribù dei Goti, che da Gotland e Götaland invece si riunirono per emigrare verso il resto d'Europa.

Situata a nordest dell'isola di Öland, dal 1645 (Trattato di Brömsebro) fa parte della Svezia. Da un punto di vista amministrativo l'isola costituisce una contea, la contea di Gotland, è inoltre una delle province tradizionali della Svezia, della provincia fanno parte anche le piccole isole Fårö, Karlsö (Stora Karlsö e Lilla Karlsö) e Gotska Sandön, la quale ultima è parco nazionale fin dal 1909.

Il nome latino di Gotland, usato talvolta ancora nel ventunesimo secolo, è Gotlandia. Sull'isola vivono 58 003 persone (2016) con una densità di 18 abitanti/km². Il centro urbano principale è la città di Visby con circa 21 000 abitanti. Le attività economiche principali sono l'agricoltura e il turismo.

Gotland ist eine schwedische Insel und historische Provinz. Die nach Seeland (Dänemark) und vor Fünen (Dänemark) sowie Saaremaa (Estland) zweitgrößte Insel der Ostsee liegt nordöstlich von Öland. Ihren Namen hat sie vom Germanenstamm der Goten, die die Insel laut der Gutasaga um die Zeitenwende zumindest teilweise verließen, um auf dem Kontinent, später als Ost- und Westgoten, große Reiche im mediterranen Raum zu errichten.

Gotland (/ˈɡɒtlənd/, Swedish: [ˈɡɔ̌tːland] (listen);[4] Gutland in the local dialect[5]), also historically spelled Gottland or Gothland (/ˈɡɒθlənd/),[6] is Sweden's largest island.[7][8][9][10] It is also a province, county, municipality, and diocese. The province includes the islands of Fårö and Gotska Sandön to the north, as well as the Karlsö Islands (Lilla and Stora) to the west. The population is 58,595,[2] of which about 23,600 live in Visby, the main town.[1] Outside Visby, there are minor settlements and a mainly rural population. The island of Gotland and the other areas of the province of Gotland make up less than one percent of Sweden's total land area. The county formed by the archipelago is the second smallest by area and is the least populated in Sweden. In spite of the small size due to its narrow width, the driving distance between the furthermost points of the populated islands is about 170 kilometres (110 mi).[11]
