Der United States Geological Survey kartierte sie anhand eigener Vermessungen und Luftaufnahmen der United States Navy aus den Jahren von 1959 bis 1965. Das Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names benannte sie 1970 nach Lieutenant Commander Thomas E. Orr (* 1934), Versorgungsoffizier und Leiter einer Einheit von Rettungsfallschirmspringern der Flugstaffel VX-6 bei der Operation Deep Freeze des Jahres 1968.

Orr Island is an ice-covered island 9.3 kilometres (5 nmi) long, lying 5.6 kilometres (3 nmi) southwest of Grinder Island in Marshall Archipelago, off the coast of Marie Byrd Land. Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959–65. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Lieutenant Commander Thomas E. Orr, Supply Officer and Officer-in-Charge of the Para Rescue Team of U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 during Operation Deep Freeze 1968.

L'isola Orr è un'isola rocciosa della Terra di Marie Byrd, in Antartide. L'isola, che è completamente ricoperta dai ghiacci e che si estende in direzione est/ovest per circa 8 km, fa parte dell'arcipelago Marshall e, come le altre isole di questo arcipelago, si trova davanti alla costa di Saunders, all'interno della baia di Sulzberger, dove è completamente circondata dai ghiacci della piattaforma glaciale Sulzberger e dove giace subito a sud dell'isola Grinder.[1]
