Motutakupu Island, auch Gannet Island genannt, ist eine kleine Insel der Inselgruppe der Motukawao Group im Norden der Nordinsel von Neuseeland.[1]

Geographie

Motutakupu Island befindet sich an der Westküste der Coromandel Peninsula, rund 13,7 km nordwestlich von Coromandel und rund 8,8 km südwestlich der Colville Bay. Sie hat eine Größe von 0,27 Hektar. Motutakupu Island besitzt eine Länge von rund 127 m in Nordwest-Südost-Richtung und eine maximale Breite von rund 37 m in Südwest-Nordost-Richtung.[2] Die Höhe der Insel liegt unterhalb 20 m.[3]

Südöstlich von Motutakupu Island befindet sich in einer Entfernung von rund 1,385 km die nächstliegende und Moturua Island vorgelagerte kleine unbenannte Insel und in einer Distanz von rund 1,61 km Moturua Island selbst. In ostnordöstlicher Richtung findet man nach 1,45 km die Nachbarinsel Motukaramarama Island vor.[3][2]

Motutakapu is a rugged islet in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, lying some 5 km off the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Only 120 m long by 60 m wide, it is home to a breeding colony of Australasian gannets and has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.[1] Surveys of breeding gannets there in the mid-20th century showed an increase from about 200 pairs in 1928 to 400 pairs in 1947,[2] while the BirdLife assessment was based on 1980-1981 surveys showing about 4500 pairs.[1]
