Der United States Geological Survey kartierte ihn anhand von Vermessungen und mithilfe von Luftaufnahmen der United States Navy zwischen 1960 und 1963. Benannt ist ihn nach Leutnant Thomas R. Bates, Chirurg und medizinischer Offizier auf der McMurdo-Station im Jahr 1964.

The geographical feature was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–63, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant Thomas R. Bates, U.S. Navy, Flight Surgeon and Medical Officer at McMurdo Station, 1964. The point lies on the Pennell Coast, a portion of Antarctica lying between Cape Williams and Cape Adare.
