Nasce dal versante meridionale delle Alture di Smolensk, nei pressi della cittadina di El'nja. Scorre dapprima con direzione mediamente nordorientale, mantenendola all'incirca fino a metà percorso; piega successivamente ad angolo retto, dirigendosi verso sudest attraversando la parte occidentale della oblast' di Kaluga. Sfocia nella Oka poco a monte di Kaluga.
Il fiume è gelato nei mesi che vanno da dicembre a fine marzo, periodo in cui si hanno i valori minimi annui di portata; successivamente al disgelo, fino al mese di maggio, si hanno le maggiori piene.
I suoi maggiori affluenti sono: Vorja (lungo 153 km) e Šanja (131 km) provenienti dalla sinistra idrografica, Ressa (119 km) dalla destra.
La Ugra non tocca, nel suo intero corso, centri urbani di rilievo tranne Juchnov.

The Ugra (Russian: Угра́) is a river in Smolensk and Kaluga Oblasts in Russia, left tributary of the Oka. The east-flowing Ugra joins the north-flowing Oka at Kaluga and the united river, called the Oka, continues east to the Volga. In the 16th century, the Ugra-Oka confluence was the western end of a line of forts protecting Muscovy from Tatar raids. The river is known for the Great stand on the Ugra River. Its length is 399 kilometres (248 mi) and its basin 15,700 square kilometres (6,100 sq mi).[1] It is frozen from late November (sometimes as late as January) until the end of March. 60% of its annual flow is snowmelt, mostly in April.[es] Río Ugrá
