Die Insel ist 46,07 km² groß und Heimat von 242 Menschen (Stand 2000),[1] die fast alle ausschließlich in der einzigen Ortschaft Ouzinkie leben.

Als Teil Russisch-Amerikas gab Juri Lissjanski der Insel 1805 den Namen Jelowy-Insel. Zwischen 1808 und 1836 war Spruce Island die Heimat des Einsiedlers Herman von Alaska, einem Heiligen der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche und Schutzpatron der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche in Amerika. Ein ihm geweihter Schrein und Pilgerstätte befindet sich auf der Insel.

Spruce Island (Russian: Еловый остров) is an island in the Kodiak Archipelago of the Gulf of Alaska in the US state of Alaska. It lies just off the northeast corner of Kodiak Island, across the Narrow Strait. Spruce Island has a land area of 46.066 km2 (17.786 sq mi) and a population of 242 as of the 2000 census,[1] mostly in its only city, Ouzinkie, in the southwestern part of the island.
