Il fiume Waikato è il più lungo di tutta la Nuova Zelanda. Percorre circa 425 km dalle pendici orientali del monte Ruapehu nell'Isola del Nord, si unisce al bacino idrico del fiume Tongariro per poi svuotarsi nel Lago Taupo, il più grande lago di tutta la Nuova Zelanda. Poi, dalla riva nord-est del lago, prosegue verso nord creando le cascate di Huka Falls, poi scorre, ancora, verso nord-ovest attraversando i Waikato Plains (le Pianure di Waikato). Sfocia nel Mar di Tasman a sud di Auckland dando il suo nome alla regione delle pianure circostanti.

Il tributario primario del fiume è il Waipa il quale fluisce nelle sue acque all'altezza di Ngaruawahia. La parola Waikato, nella lingua Māori, significa acqua che scorre. [2] Il fiume ha un significato spirituale per molte delle tribù māori della zona, come quella dei Tainui, il quale lo ritengono la fonte della loro mana o orgoglio. La marae di Turangawaewae, situato sulle sponde del fiume, vicino a Ngaruawahia, gode di molto rispetto.

È da molti anni che la tribù Tainui cerca di ristabilire il suo nesso con il fiume dopo le guerre di New Zealand land wars (vedere Invasione di Waikato ) e le confische degli anni 1860, negoziazioni con il Governo della Nuova Zelanda sono ancora in corso. Recenti accordi con la Regina d'Inghilterra, hanno ridato loro l'amministrazione della porzione di terra del Raupatu nel 2008 così adesso, la tribù Tainui amministra la zona insieme all'istituzione governativa "Enviroment Waikato".

Der Waikato River ist der längste Fluss in Neuseeland. Er befindet sich im Zentrum der Nordinsel – größtenteils in der Region Waikato – und ist insgesamt 425 Kilometer lang.

The Waikato River is the longest river in New Zealand, running for 425 kilometres (264 mi) through the North Island. It rises in the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu, joining the Tongariro River system and flowing through Lake Taupō, New Zealand's largest lake. It then drains Taupō at the lake's northeastern edge, creates the Huka Falls, and flows northwest through the Waikato Plains. It empties into the Tasman Sea south of Auckland, at Port Waikato. It gives its name to the Waikato region that surrounds the Waikato Plains. The present course of the river was largely formed about 17,000 years ago. Contributing factors were climate warming, forest being reestablished in the river headwaters and the deepening, rather than widening, of the existing river channel. The channel was gradually eroded as far up river as Piarere, leaving the old Hinuera channel through the Hinuera Gap high and dry.[3] The remains of the old river path can be clearly seen at Hinuera where the cliffs mark the ancient river edges. The river's main tributary is the Waipā River, which has its confluence with the Waikato at Ngāruawāhia.
