Il Big Sioux River ha la sua sorgente nella Contea di Roberts nel Dakota del Sud sulla Coteau des Prairies.
Nel suo corso il fiume presenta molte cascate, in particolare a Sioux Falls, dove ha dato il nome alla città.
Si unisce al fiume Missouri a nord di Sioux City nello Stato dell'Iowa.

Der Big Sioux River ist ein 470 Kilometer langer linker Nebenfluss des Missouri River im Osten von South Dakota und im Nordwesten Iowas.[en] Big Sioux River
The Big Sioux River is a tributary of the Missouri River in eastern South Dakota and northwestern Iowa in the United States.[2] It flows generally southwardly for 419 mi (674 km),[3] and its watershed is 9,006 sq mi (23,330 km2).[1] The United States Board on Geographic Names settled on "Big Sioux River" as the stream's name in 1931.[4] The river was named after the Lakota people (Sioux Natives)[5] which was known by them as Tehankasandata, or Thick Wooded River.[6][es] Río Big Sioux
