El punto de confluencia está a 102 km al sur de Daulat Beg Oldi en la carretera Darbuk-Shyok-DBO. El propio río Shyok es un afluente del río Indo, lo que hace que el Galwan forme parte del sistema del río Indo.[1]
El estrecho valle del río Galwan, a medida que fluye a través de las montañas Karakoram, ha sido un punto de discordia entre China y la India en su disputa fronteriza. En 1962, un puesto de avanzada establecido por la India en la parte alta del valle del Galwan causó un "apogeo de la tensión" entre los dos países. China atacó y eliminó el puesto en la guerra de 1962, llegando a su línea de reclamación de 1960. Der Galwan ist ein Fluss in der Region Aksai Chin im Unionsterritorium Ladakh, in einer Hochlandregion am Westrand von Tibet, nordöstlich von Kaschmir. Das Gebiet steht unter chinesischer Kontrolle, wird aber von Indien beansprucht. Er mündet in den Shyok, einen Zufluss des Indus. Er ist nach seinem Entdecker Ghulam Rasool Galwan (1878–1925) benannt.[1]

It originates near the caravan campsite Samzungling on the eastern side of the Karakoram range and flows west to join the Shyok River. The point of confluence is 102 km south of Daulat Beg Oldi. Shyok River itself is a tributary of the Indus River, making Galwan a part of the Indus River system.
