El río Cenepa nace en la cordillera del Cóndor, casi en la frontera entre el Perú y Ecuador. Discurre íntegramente por la provincia de Condorcanqui (distrito de El Cenepa). El río discurre siempre en dirección sur, bañando las localidades de Huampani (11 236 hab. en 2005) y Orellana, donde desemboca en el río Marañón por su ribera izquierda. La cuenca del río Cenepa está al oeste de la del Santiago, otro tributario del Marañón.

Sus principales afluentes son los ríos Comaina y Numpatkaim. Toda su cuenca pertenece muy poco habitada y explorada.

Historia

En su territorio se llevaron a cabo en 1995 las acciones de la Guerra del Cenepa, un conflicto fronterizo en la cordillera del Cóndor. Que involucro a Ecuador y a Perú en un conflicto armado por territorio fronterizo.

The Cenepa River is a 185-km stretch of river where its basin borders Ecuador and Peru, in the Cordillera del Cóndor mountain range in South America.[1] Its drainage basin borders to the north on Ecuador, to the east on the districts of Río Santiago and Nieva, on the south with the district of Imaza, and on the west with Ecuador. The River has been subject to several border disputes between Peru and Ecuador the most notable was in 1995 the Cenepa War. The Awajún (Aguaruna People), the locals around the Cenepa River Basin have had issues with the legal certainty of the River due to its cultural significance and the resources. The Cenepa River has been impacted by the consequences of military action in the region through skirmishes between Ecuadorian and Peruvian forces along with the establishment of military camps and outposts. Expansion of local communities and the influence of mining have to different degrees interrupted the natural habitats of local fauna and flora.[2] The Cenepa River has had government intervention through the growing recognition of the importance of preservation. This was a direct result of the peace talks that followed the Cenepa War in 1995.[2],or the Battle of Tiwinza.[3]
