En la mitología griega, el Flegetonte (en griego Φλεγέθων Phlegéthôn, ‘flamígero’ [Virgilio: Eneida 6.265, 550; Stat.Theb. 4.522] o Piriflegetonte [Πυριφλεγέθων Puriphlegéthôn, ‘llameando de fuego’; Homero: Odisea 10.313, Estrabón: 5.244]) es uno de los cinco ríos del Hades, junto con Estigia, Lete, Cocito y Aqueronte. Es un afluente del Aqueronte, y se le considera un río de menor importancia que el Cocito.

Por él corría fuego que ardía pero que no consumía combustible alguno. En la Divina comedia (canto XIV) el Flegetonte estaba compuesto de sangre hirviendo y formaba parte del séptimo círculo del Infierno, conteniendo las sombras de los tiranos, los asesinos, los ladrones y los culpables de pecados relacionados con la violencia hacia los semejantes. Virgilio menciona al Flegetonte con los otros ríos infernales en la Eneida, libro VI, 265, 551.

In Greek mythology, the river Phlegethon (Φλεγέθων, English translation: "flaming") or Pyriphlegethon (Πυριφλεγέθων, English translation: "fire-flaming") was one of the five rivers in the infernal regions of the underworld, along with the rivers Styx, Lethe, Cocytus, and Acheron. Plato describes it as "a stream of fire, which coils round the earth and flows into the depths of Tartarus".[1] It was parallel to the river Styx. It is said that the goddess Styx was in love with Phlegethon, but she was consumed by his flames and sent to Hades. Eventually, when Hades allowed her river to flow through, they reunited. Il Flegetonte (in greco antico: Φλεγέθων, Phlegéthōn) o Piriflegetonte (Πυριφλεγέθων, Pyriphlegéthōn) è uno dei fiumi che scorrono nell'Ade, l'oltretomba nella mitologia greca. Il fiume infernale scorre attorno a Erebo che rappresenta la parte più tenebrosa dell'Ade e confluisce, assieme al Cocito, nell'Acheronte. Il suo nome significa "fiume del fuoco".
