Su cuenca se encuentra entre la de los ríos Turia y Júcar, y la del Barranco de Picasent, y tiene una extensión de 479 kilómetros cuadrados. Es una de las mayores manifestaciones de endorreísmo en la Comunidad Valenciana, pues sus aguas vierten a la Albufera de Valencia y no al mar.
