The Phongolo River is a river in South Africa. It is a tributary of the Maputo River. It rises near Utrecht in northern KwaZulu-Natal, flows east through Pongolo, is dammed at Pongolapoort, and crosses the Ubombo Mountains; then it flows north towards Mozambique, joining the Maputo River. [2]

Its main tributaries are the Bivane River and the Mozana River in South Africa, as well as the Ngwavuma in Eswatini.[3]

Il Pongola o Phongolo (AF) e' un fiume del Sudafrica, immissario del Maputo, le cui sorgenti si trovano presso la località di Utrecht, nella zona settentrionale della provincia del KwaZulu-Natal. Il fiume poi scorre verso est, attraversando la cittadina di Pongola, e' sbarratto da una diga nei pressi di Pongolapoort, poi attraversa i Monti Umombo quindi volge a nord verso il Mozambico, dove le sue acque si gettano nel Maputo. I suoi maggiori tributari solo il Bivane ed il Mozana in Sudafrica ed il Ngwavuma in eSwatini.
