The Paraíba do Norte River, mostly known as Paraíba River, is the most important watercourse of the state of Paraíba in northeastern Brazil.[1][2] The river originates in the Borborema Plateau, and flows northeast to empty into the Atlantic Ocean, north of João Pessoa, the state capital.[1] Its constantly menaced estuary has a handful of little islands—among them Restinga and Stuart—and is the habitat of a range of animal species, as well as a number of ecosystems such as mangroves, the Atlantic Forest and salt marshes.[1]

il fiume Paraíba è un fiume brasiliano che attraversa lo Stato della Paraíba. Si tratta di uno dei corsi d'acqua più importanti dello Stato, per la sua lunghezza e per la sua importanza economica. Il fiume, pur mantenendo sempre il suo alveo, cambia molto di dimensione a seconda della stagione dell'anno, in funzione dell'intensità delle piogge nel suo bacino; si tratta comunque di un fiume perenne e raggiunge sempre la foce. Nel 2006, l'inventario dell'avifauna del suo estuario ha rilevato l'esistenza di 89 specie di uccelli tra endemici e migratori.
