Vom 17. bis ins 19. Jahrhundert war der Echimamish River Teil der Handelsroute der Hudson’s Bay Company zwischen ihrem nordamerikanischen Hauptquartier York Factory an der Hudson Bay und ihrem bedeutendsten Handelsposten im Inland, Norway House. Zwischen den 1820er Jahren und den 1840er Jahren folgte auch der York Factory Express, eine Fernhandelsroute der Hudson’s Bay Company zwischen der York Factory und dem Fort Vancouver im Columbia District, teilweise dem Flusslauf. Seit 2006 gehört er als Teil der Strecke von der York Factory zum Norway House, zusammen mit dem Hayes River und einem Teil des Nelson River, zum Canadian Heritage Rivers System.[1]

Mit dem Bedeutungsverlust des Fellhandels zu Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden auch die Wasserwege des Flusses kaum noch benutzt und so wird er heute nur noch von den ortsansässigen Cree und gelegentlich von Touristen befahren.

The Echimamish River is a river bifurcation in Manitoba, Canada. Located 70 kilometres (43 mi) northeast of the northern tip of Lake Winnipeg, it is about 60 kilometres (37 mi) long and runs east–west between the Hayes River and the Nelson River. It flows through nearly flat swampy country and has a barely detectable current. Flowing through peat bogs, the water acquires a dark color, hence the old name of Blackwater Creek. Since it is shallow canoe navigation is helped by beaver ponds. Morse claims that it flows in two directions from a central beaver pond.[1] On the Echimamish is the Painted Stone Portage. This is not the divide between the two river basins, but a short (20 paces) carry around a shallow and rocky section. The only other obstacles are beaver dams.[2][3][4]
