Fu mappato dalla Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (CTAE) nel 1957, sotto la direzione dell'esploratore polare britannico Vivian Fuchs. Prende il nome dai cianobatteri azotofissatori di acqua dolce del genere Nostoc, che formano colonie di filamenti di acqua dolce che colonizzano il lago.[1]

Der Nostoc Lake ist ein See im ostantarktischen Coatsland. Er liegt etwa 1,5 km südwestlich des Mount Provender im westlichen Teil der Shackleton Range.

Nostoc Lake is a lake lying 1 nautical mile (1.9 km) southwest of Mount Provender in the west part of the Shackleton Range. It was first mapped in 1957 by the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition and given the generic name of the freshwater alga found growing in the lake.
