Il lago è formato da uno sbarramento sul fiume Aspropotamo. Nel lago confluiscono altri tre fiumi: l'Agrafiotis, il Tavropos ed il Trikerioti.
La diga
Lo sbarramento sull'Aspropotamo fu realizzato fra il 1966 ed il 1969 ai fini delle sfruttamento del fiume per la produzione di energia elettrica. La centrale, che si trova ai piedi della diga, con una potenza di 440 MW, è la più grande centrale di questo tipo della Grecia.

Der Kremasta-Stausee (griechisch τεχνητή λίμνη Κρεμαστών, gesprochen Techniti limni Kremaston; vereinfacht Λίμνη Κρεμαστών) ist der größte Stausee in Griechenland. Lake Kremasta (Greek: Λίμνη Κρεμαστών) is the largest artificial lake in Greece. The construction of Kremasta Dam was completed in 1965 concentrating waters from four rivers: Acheloos, Agrafiotis, Tavropos and Trikeriotis. The water that is accumulated in the artificial lake is about 3.8 cubic kilometres (3,100,000 acre⋅ft).[1] It prevents flooding of the Acheloos, and supplies electricity to the national grid during peaks of demand. The power station at the dam is the biggest hydroelectric plant in Greece (rated power: 437.2 MW). It was constructed in 1966 and is owned by the Public Power Corporation of Greece (DEH A.E.). Кремаста[1] (греч. Λίμνη Κρεμαστών) — крупнейшее водохранилище в Греции. Объём водохранилища составляет 3,8 км³, полезный объём — 3,3 км³. Водохранилище используется для генерации электроэнергии и защищает территорию ниже по течению от наводнений[2]. Находится на границе периферийных единиц Эвритания и Этолия и Акарнания. Создано в 1965 году в результате строительства насыпной плотины высотой 165 метров, которая на момент строительства являлась крупнейшей земляной дамбой Европы[3] и на которой в 1966 году Государственная энергетическая корпорация Греции построила гидроэлектростанцию.
