The city of Alūksne is located by the lake.

Lake Aluksne is the 11th biggest lake in Latvia (15.437 km²). At its deepest the lake is 15.2 m deep, but the average depth is 7.1 m.

The lake contains twelve different species of fish.

There are four islands within Lake Aluksne. The ruins of historic Alūksne Castle are on the largest island (known as Castle Island or St. Mary's Island, because the castle was originally called Marienburg, "St. Mary's Castle").

Alūksne River (a tributary of Pededze) flows out of the lake.

А́лукснес[3][4][5] (устар. Мариенбургское[6]; латыш. Alūksnes ezers, латг. Oluksnes azars)[4] — озеро в Алуксненском крае Латвии. Одиннадцатое по величине озеро Латвии[7]. Большая часть акватории находится на территории Яуналуксненской волости, кроме южной оконечности, относящейся к городу Алуксне[8][4]. По западному берегу озера проходит граница Зиемерской волости, а по северному — Маркалнской волости[8][2]. Общая площадь озера составляет 15,57 км²[1], из которых 15,437 км² приходится на водную поверхность[2]. Средняя глубина 7,1 м, самая глубокая точка (15,2 м) находится в северной части озера. Острова занимают 13,2 га, самый большой — остров Пилссала (латыш. Pilssala) площадью 9,9 га, на котором располагаются руины замковой крепости 1342 года постройки[2]. Бассейн озера составляет 28,4 км²[1].
