Der See wird vom nördlich gelegenen See Nerkoonjärvi gespeist und fließt zum südlich gelegenen See Maaninkajärvi und weiter zum Kallavesi ab. Der Ahkiolahtikanal verbindet den Onkivesi mit dem Maaninkajärvi. Die Fläche beträgt 113,62 km².[1] Der See liegt auf 84,7 m Höhe.[1] Lapinlahti liegt am nordöstlichen Seeufer. Maaninka liegt unweit des Südufers des Onkivesi.

Onkivesi is a rather large lake of Finland. It belongs to the Vuoksi main catchment area. It is located in the Northern Savonia region and mostly in Lapinlahti municipality. Water in the lake is somewhat brownish partly due to natural inflows and partly due to the location in an agricultural area.[1]
