Le Thomas Hills sono state mappate dall'United States Geological Survey (USGS) sulla base di rilevazioni e foto aeree scattate dalla U.S. Navy nel periodo 1956-66.

La denominazione è stata assegnata dall'Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) su proposta del capitano Finn Rønne, della U.S. Navy Reserve, responsabile della Ellsworth Station nel 1957, in onore di Charles S. Thomas, Segretario alla Marina degli Stati Uniti d'America nel periodo 1954-57, durante i primi anni dell'Operazione Deep Freeze.[1][2]

The Thomas Hills (.mw-parser-output .geo-default,.mw-parser-output .geo-dms,.mw-parser-output .geo-dec{display:inline}.mw-parser-output .geo-nondefault,.mw-parser-output .geo-multi-punct{display:none}.mw-parser-output .longitude,.mw-parser-output .latitude{white-space:nowrap}84°21′S 65°12′W) are a linear group of hills, 17 miles (27 km) long, between Foundation Ice Stream and MacNamara Glacier at the north end of the Patuxent Range in the Pensacola Mountains, Antarctica. They were mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1956–66. The hills were named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names at the suggestion of Captain Finn Ronne, U.S. Navy Reserve, leader at Ellsworth Station, 1957. Charles S. Thomas was Secretary of the Navy, 1954–57, during the first few years of U.S. Navy Operation Deep Freeze.
