Descrizione

Si trova sul confine di tre cantoni:

• Canton Appenzello Interno - Distretto di Schwende
• Canton Appenzello Esterno - Comune di Hundwil
• Canton San Gallo - Comune di Wildhaus-Alt Sankt Johann - Distretto di Toggenburg.

Costituisce il punto più elevato dell'Appenzello Interno e dell'Appenzello Esterno.

Dalla cima di questo monte è possibile vedere ben 6 Paesi: Svizzera, Germania, Liechtenstein, Austria, Francia e Italia.

È possibile raggiungere la cima di questo monte tramite una funivia, rinnovata nel 2000 dalla località di Schwägalp. Questa funivia è lunga 2307 metri ed è alta 1123 metri.

Storia

Durante la Repubblica Elvetica, tra il 1798 e il 1803 questo monte diede nome anche all'allora Cantone chiamato appunto Canton Säntis.

Stazione meteorologica

Nel 1882, sulla cima di questo monte è stata costruita una stazione meteorologica che è oggi la stazione di riferimento delle Alpi.

Der Säntis ist mit 2501,9 m ü. M. der höchste Berg im Alpstein (Ostschweiz). Durch die exponierte, nördlich vorgelagerte Lage des Alpsteins ist der Berg eine von weither sichtbare Landmarke. So gibt es beispielsweise im Schwarzwald oder auf der Schwäbischen Alb Häuser mit dem Namen Säntisblick. Vom Säntisgipfel aus kann man in sechs Länder sehen: Schweiz, Deutschland, Österreich, Liechtenstein, Frankreich und Italien.[1]

At 2,501.9 metres (8,208 ft) above sea level, Säntis is the highest mountain in the Alpstein massif of northeastern Switzerland. It is also the culminating point of the whole Appenzell Alps, between Lake Walen and Lake Constance. Shared by three cantons, the mountain is a highly visible landmark thanks to its exposed northerly position within the Alpstein massif. As a consequence, houses called Säntisblick (English: Säntis view) can be found in regions as far away as the Black Forest in Germany. Säntis is among the most prominent summits in the Alps and the most prominent summit in Europe with an observation deck on the top.[2] The panorama from the summit is spectacular. Six countries can be seen if the weather allows: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France, and Italy.[3]
