Posizione e geografia
Sono un altopiano del cosiddetto Allegheny Plateau grande circa 6.200 km². Formano una scarpata che domina ad est della Delaware Valley.
Le montagne sono delimitate a nord dal lago Wallenpaupack, a ovest dalla Wyoming Valley e a sud dalla Lehigh Valley.
La vetta più alta è rappresentata è il North Knob (821 m).
Etimologia
Il termine Pocono deriva dal termine minsi-indiano Pokawachne (da pronunciare come "Poke Ah Waak-nay"), che significa letteralmente "torrente tra due colline".[1]
Attività ricreative
La zona è molto frequentata soprattutto nel periodo estivo ed è utilizzata come destinazione ricreativa per gli abitanti di tutto il nord-est, in particolare per quelli delle città di New York e Filadelfia.
Sono presenti un parco nazionale, il Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, sette parchi statali e altre aree naturali protette.
Sono diverse le opportunità per i visitatori: dagli sport acquatici alla pesca, passando per il campeggio e gli sci. Inoltre è presente anche un autodromo, il Pocono Raceway.

Die Pocono Mountains, in Kurzform auch als Poconos bekannt, liegen im Nordosten des US-Bundesstaates Pennsylvania. Die natürliche Grenze des Gebirges ist im Osten der Delaware River und im Westen der Lehigh River.[1] In dem Gebiet leben ca. 340.300 Bewohner mit stark wachsender Tendenz.[2] Das Gebirge ist zwischen 430 und 675 Meter hoch und besteht zum größten Teil aus hartem Sandstein. Es gibt abgeflachte Plateaus und hügelige Gegenden, die meist stark bewaldet sind. Die höchste Erhebung ist Kistler Ledge in Coolbaugh Township mit einer Höhe von 675 m.[3] Das Gebirge hat sehr viele natürliche und künstlich angelegte Seen und wird als Touristenziel genutzt.
