Fu scoperto dalla Spedizione Nimrod (British Antarctic Expedition, 1907–09) guidata dall'esploratore polare britannico Ernest Shackleton, che ne assegnò la denominazione in onore della sua sorella maggiore Kathleen Shackleton (1884-1961).[1]
