Furono avvistati per la prima volta dall'aereo dalla Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (CTAE) nel 1956, ricevendo l'attuale denominazione in onore della Theron, la nave che assisteva la CTAE nel 1955-56.[1]

Die Theron Mountains (in Argentinien Cordillera Rufino) sind ein Gebirgszug im ostantarktischen Coatsland. Mit Höhen von bis zu 1175 m erstrecken sie sich in nordost-südwestlicher Ausdehnung über eine Länge von 45 km am Ostrand des Filchner-Ronne-Schelfeises.

They were first seen from the air in 1956 by the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (CTAE) and named for the Theron, the ship of the CTAE in 1955–56.
