Descrizione

La vetta è intitolata a William O. Owen che organizzò la prima ascensione documentata del Grand Teton nel 1898[2]. Il Monte Owen fa parte del Cathedral Group, un insieme di vette concentrate nel settore centrale della catena montuosa e caratterizzate dalla particolare asperità.

I 64 km di lunghezza della cetena del Teton Range sono i più recenti delle Montagne Rocciose essendosi formati circa 9 milioni di anni fa, durante il Miocene[3]. Le glaciazioni che si sono susseguite hanno scolpito il Monte Owen e le altre vette della catena nelle loro forme attuali[2].

Ascensioni

Dopo i primi due tentativi falliti, uno nel 1927 e l'altro nel 1928, il Monte Owen fu scalato per la prima volta nel 1930 e fu una delle ultime grandi vette del Teton Range ad essere raggiunte[2]. Numerose vie di salita sono state esplorate, con un grado di difficoltà che varia tra 5,1 a 5,10[4].

Der Mount Owen ist mit einer Höhe von 3942 m der zweithöchste Berg der Teton Range und des Grand-Teton-Nationalparks im Westen des US-Bundesstaates Wyoming.[1][2] Er ist Teil der Cathedral Group, einem Bergstock, der die höchsten Gipfel der Teton Range zwischen den Schluchten Cascade Canyon und Avalanche Canyon umfasst. Der Mount Owen liegt ca. 0,6 km südwestlich des Grand Teton, dem höchsten Berg der Teton Range und 1,2 km westlich des Teewinot Mountain. Der Cascade Canyon befindet sich unmittelbar nördlich des Mount Owen, der kleinere Valhalla Canyon verläuft an den Westhängen des Berges. Der größte Gletscher im Grand-Teton-Nationalpark, der Teton Glacier, liegt südlich des Mount Owen.[3]

Mount Owen (12,933 feet (3,942 m)) is the second highest peak in the Teton Range, Grand Teton National Park in the U.S. state of Wyoming.[3] The peak is named after William O. Owen, who organized the first documented ascent of the Grand Teton in 1898.[4] Mount Owen is part of the Cathedral Group of high Teton peaks, a collection of peaks in the central section of the range that are particularly rugged. The 40-mile (64 km) long Teton Range is the youngest mountain chain in the Rocky Mountains, and began its uplift 9 million years ago, during the Miocene.[5] Several periods of glaciation have carved Mount Owen and the other peaks of the range into their current shapes.[4] Valhalla Canyon is situated on the west slopes of Mount Owen.
