La denominazione fu assegnata dalla Spedizione Nimrod, svoltasi tra gli anni 1907-09, la prima delle tre spedizioni antartiche guidate dall'esploratore britannico Ernest Shackleton, in onore di Joseph James Kinsey (1852-1936) di Christchurch, l'agente neozelandese della spedizione.[1]

It was named by the British Antarctic Expedition, 1907–09, for J.J. Kinsey of Christchurch, who conducted the affairs of the expedition in New Zealand.[1]
