Localizzato ad una latitudine di 66° 48' sud e ad una longitudine di 89°11' est, il cono si trova immediatamente ad ovest del ghiacciaio Posadowsky di fronte al mare di Davis nella terra di Guglielmo II (territorio antartico australiano).
Scoperto nel febbraio 1902 durante la spedizione Gauss da Erich von Drygalski è stato intitolato, come la nave della spedizione, in onore di Carl Friedrich Gauss.

Der Gaußberg (internationalisiert auch Gaussberg) ist ein erloschener Vulkan an der Küste des Südpolarmeeres (Davissee) im Kaiser-Wilhelm-II.-Land in der Antarktis. Damit befindet er sich im Australischen Anspruchsgebiet der Antarktis.[en] Gaussberg
Gaussberg (or Schwarzen Berg,[3] Mount Gauss) is an extinct, 370-metre-high (1,210-foot) high volcanic cone in East Antarctica fronting on Davis Sea immediately west of Posadowsky Glacier. It is ice-free and conical in nature, having formed subglacially about 55,000 years ago. The current edifice is thought to be the remains of a once-larger mountain that has been reduced by glacial and subaerial erosion. The volcano has produced lamproite magmas, and is the youngest volcano to have produced such magmas on Earth.[fr] Mont Gauss
