Nel 1967 fu effettuata una ricognizione aerofotografica da parte degli aerei della U.S. Navy. Un'ispezione al suolo fu condotta dalla British Antarctic Survey (BAS) nel periodo 1968-71.

Ricevette l'attuale denominazione nel 1971 dal Comitato britannico per i toponimi antartici (UK-APC), in onore di William Etchells, meccanico dei motori diesel per la BAS nel periodo 1962-88 e che aveva operato nella catena dei Monti Shackleton tra il 1968 e 69.[1]

Mount Etchells ist ein rund 900 m hoher Berg im ostantarktischen Coatsland. Als einer der La-Grange-Nunatakker ragt er westlich des Mount Beney im nördlichen Teil der Shackleton Range auf.

It was photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy in 1967 and surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) between 1968–71. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after William A. Etchells, a diesel mechanic and Projects Officer (engineering) with the BAS from 1962–88, who worked in the Shackleton Range between 1968–69.[1]
