Fu fotografato dall'aereo da parte della U.S. Navy nel 1967 e fu ispezionato dalla British Antarctic Survey nel periodo 1968–71. La denominazione fu assegnata 1975 dal Comitato britannico per i toponimi antartici (UK-APC) assieme ai nomi dei geologi raggruppati in quest'area, in onore del professore inglese Arthur Holmes, al quale sono pure intitolate le Holmes Hills nella Terra di Palmer.[1]

Der Holmes Summit ist ein Berg im ostantarktischen Coatsland. Er ist mit 1875 m die höchste Erhebung der Shackleton Range und gehört zu den Read Mountains.

Holmes Summit is a peak rising to 1,875 metres (6,150 ft), the highest elevation in the Read Mountains of the Shackleton Range in Antarctica. It was photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy in 1967 and was surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey in the period 1968–71. In association with the names of geologists grouped in this area, it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1971 after Professor Arthur Holmes, after whom the Holmes Hills in Palmer Land were also named.[1]
