La denominazione è stata assegnata dal gruppo sud della New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (1963–64) a causa della notevole presenza in queste colline di gabbro, una roccia magmatica intrusiva di colore scuro.[1]

Die Gabbro Hills sind eine Reihe schroffer Gebirgskämme an der Dufek-Küste in der antarktischen Ross Dependency. Sie erstrecken sich im Königin-Maud-Gebirge entlang des Ross-Schelfeises zwischen den Einmündungen des Barrett- und des Gough-Gletschers. Nach Süden reichen sie bis zum Ropebrake-Pass.

They were so named by the Southern Party of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (1963–64) because of the prevalence of gabbro, a dark, plutonic rock, in the area.[1]
