El 13 de agosto de 1859, el inglés Leslie Stephen logró subir hasta la cima y se convirtió en la primera persona en escalarlo. Este habría sido apoyado por los guías de montaña Anton Siegen, Johann Siegen y Joseph Ebener.
Como los dedos de una mano, en el lado sur del Bietschhorn se encuentran varios valles como el Bietschtal o el Baltschiedertal que hace parte del piso bajo alpino y que se dirige hacia el valle del Ródano que marca un aire más bien mediterráneo, mientras que en el norte el Löschental forma la frontera del macizo del Bietschhorn.
Para aprovechar la insolación de la que gozan las pendientes del valle, se desarrolló desde la antigüedad un complejo sistema de irrigación canalizada en madera para poder desarrollar la actividad agrícola.

Das 3934 m ü. M. hohe Bietschhorn ist neben dem Aletschhorn einer der markantesten Gipfel im südlichen, zum Schweizer Kanton Wallis gehörigen Teil der Berner Alpen. Früher wurde es im Lötschental auch „Nesthorn“ genannt. Die nordöstlichen und südlichen Hänge des Berges sind Teil des UNESCO-Weltnaturerbes Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn.[en] Bietschhorn
The Bietschhorn (3,934 m) is a mountain in canton Wallis to the south of the Bernese Alps in Switzerland. The northeast and southern slopes of the mountain are part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area (formerly Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn) listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes the Jungfrau and the Aletsch Glacier. The Bietschhorn is located on the south side of the Lötschental valley and form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Region at the north end of the Bietschtal valley and Baltschiedertal valley.
