Geology

Like the other mountains in the Hohburg area, the Löbenberg, the highest of these elevations, is of volcanic origin. Its age is estimated at around 280 million years. During the ice ages, the hilltop was ground down to its current round shape. It consists mostly of quartz porphyry, which was mined in several quarries from the mid-19th century to the early 1960s for use as paving stones and gravel.

Der Löbenberg ist ein Berg in der eher flachen Landschaft zwischen Leipzig und Torgau. Er liegt etwa 2 km nordwestlich von Hohburg im Sächsischen Hügelland. Seine Höhe beträgt zwar nur 240 m ü. NHN, trotzdem ist er aber mit den Resten einer alten Rodelbahn als Wintersportstätte genutzt worden. Der Berg ist weithin sichtbar. Er bildet den Mittelpunkt eines Landschaftsschutzgebiets und gehört zusammen mit dem Naturschutzgebiet Kleiner Berg zum Erholungsgebiet Hohburger Berge (auch Hohburger Schweiz genannt).
