Die Besatzung des Eisbrechers USS Glacier entdeckte ihn am 4. Februar 1962. Das Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names benannte ihn 1966 nach Leutnant William T. Hummel von den Reservestreitkräften der United States Navy, Hubschrauberpilot an Bord des Eisbrechers zum Zeitpunkt der Entdeckung der Insel.

It was discovered and first charted from the USS Glacier (AGB-4) on February 4, 1962, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant William T. Hummel, U.S. Navy, a helicopter pilot aboard the Glacier at the time of discovery.[1]
