Das Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names benannte ihn im Jahr 2000 nach dem US-amerikanischen Elektroingenieur Larry F. Lutz von der University of Maryland, der von 1980 bis 2000 im Rahmen des United States Antarctic Program an der Entwicklung diverser wissenschaftlicher Messinstrumente und in 17 Kampagnen an deren Installation auf der McMurdo-Station, der Amundsen-Scott-Südpolstation und der Siple-Station beteiligt war.

Lutz Hill is a hill rising to about 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) 1 nautical mile (2 km) southeast of The Tooth in the Kyle Hills of Ross Island, Antarctica. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 2000 after electrical engineer Larry F. Lutz of the Institute for Physical Science and Technology, University of Maryland, a specialist in the development of scientific research instrumentation for ground-based, balloon, and rocket sounding programs for the United States Antarctic Program. Lutz spent 17 summer seasons at McMurdo Station, South Pole Station, and Siple Station in the years 1980–2000.[1]
