Wissenschaftler der United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) entdeckten das Gebirge bei einem Überflug am 18. Dezember 1940. Namensgeber ist der US-amerikanische Politiker Harold L. Ickes (1874–1952), in dessen Amtszeit als Innenminister der Vereinigten Staaten die Gründung des United States Antarctic Service fiel.

The Ickes Mountains (/ˈɪkəs/, ICK-əs) (.mw-parser-output .geo-default,.mw-parser-output .geo-dms,.mw-parser-output .geo-dec{display:inline}.mw-parser-output .geo-nondefault,.mw-parser-output .geo-multi-punct{display:none}.mw-parser-output .longitude,.mw-parser-output .latitude{white-space:nowrap}75°29′S 139°45′W) are a series of coastal mountains that extend west from Strauss Glacier for 15 miles (24 km) in Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica. The mountains were discovered from aircraft of the U.S. Antarctic Service on December 18, 1940. The name Ickes Mountains, after U.S. Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes, appeared in the maps and reports resulting from this expedition although Ickes objected and never acquiesced to the use. Nonetheless, the name became established in usage and in 1966 was approved by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names.
