Der El Laco – Vulkankomplex befindet sich im Altiplano der zentralen Andenkordillere in Nordchile, bei San Pedro de Atacama. Er ist ein einziges Vulkangebäude das, über eine Fläche von 30 km² verteilt, aus mindestens sieben kleineren Stratovulkanen und Domen besteht mit einem zentralen Krater an seiner Spitze, dem Pico El Laco.[3][4]

Der optisch unspektakuläre El Laco – Komplex gesehen aus etwa 15 km Entfernung. Nur der konische Gipfel fällt am Horizont über dem Motorrad auf. | ||
Die geologische Karte[2] zeigt die Verteilung der schon ausgebeuteten Eisenvorkommen. | ||
Der El Laco zeichnet sich durch das Vorhandensein von Eisenerz-Lavaströmen aus. Dieses Eisenvorkommen mit 500 Millionen Tonnen Erz von 60 % Eisengehalt, besteht hauptsächlich aus Magnetit und Hämatit mit Apatit und Actinolit als Gangmineralen. Es wurde 1958 entdeckt und per Tagebau industriell abgebaut.[2][5][6]

El Laco is a volcanic complex in the Antofagasta Region of Chile. It is directly south of the Cordón de Puntas Negras volcanic chain. Part of the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes, it is a group of seven stratovolcanoes and a caldera. It is about two million years old. The main summit of the volcano is a lava dome called Pico Laco, which is variously reported to be 5,325 metres (17,470 ft) or 5,472 metres (17,953 ft) high.
