География

Остров находится в 25 км севернее острова Хорсберг южной группы Кокосовых островов. Площадь острова — около 1,2[1] км², лагуны — около 0,5 км². Наибольшая высота над уровнем моря — 1 м[2]. Атолл практически полностью закрывает лагуну от океана. Атолл, лагуна и зона океана в 1,5 км входят в состав национального парка Пулу-Килинг.

На острове обитает эндемичный подвид Gallirallus philippensis andrewsi, а также множество морских птиц. Из флоры распространены кокосовые пальмы. Морская жизнь у острова также разнообразна.

Население

Остров необитаем. После организации национального парка для посещения острова требуется разрешение.

North Keeling ist ein kleines unbewohntes Atoll mit einer Größe von ungefähr 1,2 km², etwa 25 km nördlich von Horsburgh Island gelegen. Es ist das nördliche und kleinere der beiden Atolle der australischen Kokosinseln und besteht nur aus einer Insel. Die Inselgruppe liegt etwa 2.930 km nordwestlich von Perth, 3.685 km westlich von Darwin, 960 km südwestlich der Weihnachtsinsel und mehr als 1.000 km südwestlich von Java und Sumatra entfernt. Der nächstgelegene Festlandspunkt Australiens ist das Kap Low Point auf der Halbinsel North West Cape in einer Entfernung von etwa 2.100 km.

North Keeling is a small, uninhabited coral atoll, approximately 1.2 square kilometres (0.46 sq mi) in area, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) north of Horsburgh Island. It is the northernmost atoll and island of the Australian territory of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. It consists of just one C-shaped island, a nearly closed atoll ring with a small opening into the lagoon, about 50 metres (160 ft) wide, on the east side. The lagoon is about 0.5 square kilometres (0.19 sq mi) in area. The island is home to the only surviving population of the endemic, and endangered, Cocos buff-banded rail, as well as large breeding colonies of seabirds. Since 1995, North Keeling Island and the surrounding sea to 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) from shore have been within the Pulu Keeling National Park.

North Keeling comprend une île en forme de « C », en fait un anneau corallien presque refermé avec une petite ouverture d'environ cinquante mètres, du côté est. Le lagon a une superficie d'environ 0,5 km2. L'île abrite la seule population subsistante de Gallirallus philippensis andrewsi, une sous-espèce menacée de rallidés, ainsi que d'importantes colonies d'oiseaux de mer.
