Le isole dell'atollo formano un triangolo con un'isola nel centro. L'isola principale, che porta lo stesso nome, Pukapuka, è quella più settentrionale ed è anche l'unica abitata.
I 664 abitanti (secondo il censimento del 2001) vivono nei tre villaggi di Ngake, Yato e Roto.
Vicino a Pukapuka si trovano anche gli unici due varchi nella barriera corallina per accedere alla laguna.

Pukapuka, formerly Danger Island, is a coral atoll in the northern group of the Cook Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is one of most remote islands of the Cook Islands, situated about 1,140 kilometres (708 miles) northwest of Rarotonga. On this small island, an ancient culture and distinct language has been maintained over many centuries. The traditional name for the atoll is Te Ulu-o-Te-Watu ('the head of the stone'), and the northern islet where the people normally reside is affectionately known as Wale ('Home').[es] Pukapuka (islas Cook)

Pukapuka est un atoll des îles Cook situé à 1324 kilomètres au Nord-Ouest de Rarotonga. De forme triangulaire dont chaque côté fait un peu près 10 kilomètres, il est constitué de trois îles principales où se concentrent la population : Pukapuka (également appelé Ware) au Nord, Motu Ko au Sud et Motu Kotawa à l’ouest ainsi que d’une multitude d’îlots coralliens inhabités.
